98 SSEi Wheel bearing
Has anyone ever done a front wheel bearing? 98 ssei Mine is growling so i put it up on jacks and put a stethescope up on it and the growl is from the bearing. Just wondering how hard it is to change I checked with a mechanic and he will do it for $210 the part is $145 so he is getting $65 for labor is it that easy or should i just have him do it?

65bux is a real good deal if you do not have the tools. and it does take about an hour. so the shop is billing accordingly in my opinion.
specialty tool wise you would need
- large 36mm i think dont quote me 3/4 drive socket to remove cv shaft nut
- breaker bar 3/4 drive to remove cv shaft nut
(or very good quality 3/4 drive ratchet and strong thick pipe)
- bearing puller to remove cv shaft from spindle/bearing itself two jaw ones i find dangerous a three jaw one is much safer
- T50 socket to remove brake caliper
- T55 socket to remove spindle/bearing assy
- possibly slide hammer to remove spindle/bearing itself, if its corroded in there however i find this to be the case normally on the rears
you are going into $200 territory for tools if you dont have them...
if you have a good quality set of tools its not that hard honestly in my opinion

Personally, once I have the axle nut off I lightly tap the end of the axle with a mallet to break it loose from the hub, then use a prybar to walk the hub assembly out of the steering knuckle...never needed a jawed puller. I also grease the outer casing of the hub assembly and the splines on the CV axle to make the reinstall a bit easier. PB blaster was my best friend for getting the bolts off, don't be afraid to soak the bolts with it or another penetrating oil to make breaking them loose less of a PITA.
-My caliper bolts use a 3/8 hex head, different on a 98?
-You can rent the large socket for the axle nut and a 3 jaw puller at a parts store.

Imo, its worth doing for the experience since this will carry forward to many other cars.
After your first one, it probably wont take anywhere near an hour for the next one you do.
