Don't ask me how this happened; I don't even know. I guess my streak of "fix one thing, break another" continues… somehow.

This morning, I noticed that the wiper **** on my multifunction lever wouldn't turn. Turn signals worked, cruise worked, washer pump worked, high beams worked. It was just halfway out of the socket, it seems. I pulled it out all of the way, and made sure everything was clean and intact.

How do I get it back in? Pushing gently only gets it in halfway. I'm not going to have to rip the steering column apart, am I?

Push it back in. That'* all there is to it.

Nope. Tried it in all three positions, but it wouldn't go. Right now, I have everything but wipers, as turning the end rotates the whole stick, and the plastic piece with the washer tab rotates with no resistance.

(Glad I made it home. Fine day to lose the wiper switch.)

Look in there, anything appear broken ?

Everything seemed okay. The end of the lever seemed intact, too, but I couldn't get a good look in the socket. I'll take a look when the snow dies down a bit.

Anyway...this happened to one of my Bonneville'* once. Ended up being the multifunction switch ...not the arm.

The fix for me was to replace the switch that the arm goes into. There are stepper teeth in there where the arm snaps into. they are made of soft metal.
When they stress crack from normal usage, over time the arm gets booted out. Then the arm wont go back in.

It would involve removing the steering wheel. Disconnecting the airbag system. Pulling the clock spring. And a 6 pack of beer, a few choice words.

Thanks, but I might just hit the local junkyard, to practice on something I don't have to reassemble. The Haynes manual I have says how to do it, but I wouldn't mind a clearer set of directions.

I don't. I replaced the front valve cover gasket, and the next morning, the multifunction lever pops out.
