Default MAF

Hi, mark here. Bought a used MAF sensor from salvage yard. The guy pulled it from a 96 SSEI and said it would work in my 97 SSE. Fit right but plugin was just a slight bit bigger. My SSE plug has a little side to side play but not much. Everything else looks the same. Will this be ok?

No. The two MAF sensors are not interchangeable.

I was a bit rushed by the clock on my last reply. These are two different motors. Not compatible in flow at all, which drives the need for distinctly different MAF sensors.

Hold on a second, it appears I may be wrong here. Can someone step in with a confirmation?

I checked RockAuto & Advance, both showed the same sensor for 96(1) & 97(k). You just have to make sure to get a 2 screw sensor. They must have switched to 3 screws during the 97 model year.

Hey Ted & Wren, thanks for info. Tomarrow afternoon I pull the back 3 plugs & wires. This should complete tune up. Just hope I can get My big arms between engine and block to do this. Will hang on to spare MAF till later.

I'll help with the confusion.

1996 was a transition year. Most got the newer 2-screw style. But the early models got the carried-over 3-screw (and older TB). And neither one is forwards or backwards compatible.
