I've got some more free time, so I'm getting around to fixing what'* wrong with my car -- hopefully, without keeping Bill up late.

Today'* project is fixing my cigarette lighters. They've been out of commission for too long, and while I've got a 10%-off coupon to a place specializing in car electrics, I'd rather keep it for when I really need it. Now, two out of three lighters rotate freely and don't power anything; I don't smoke, so I can't speak for their lighting ability.

Firstly, the front lighter assembly is in pieces in my ashtray (for reasons that I can't quite remember), and I'm not positive how to reassemble it. I found this old thread (https://www.gmforum.com/t272797/) which tells me how to get at it, but can anyone provide a picture or diagram of what the assembly should look like?

Secondly, the rear one has the same problem -- it rotates freely and doesn't power anything -- except it'* still entirely inside the car. Any idea how to get at that one?

(My overhead one still works fine.)

I'd pull the radio trim panel, then the panel around the cluster. That gives you access to that lighter and you can put it back together. The front and back of a lighter socket screw together.

For the console one, open your console and there'* a panel that finishes the inside from you seeing the lighter. Pop that panel out and tighten that lighter. Ensure they are hooked up electrically and that should do the trick. Otherwise, check the fuse as well.

Then drive to my place to hang out.

We'll see if I can fit in a trip to Enfield soon. Hopefully, I can procure a blower motor or radiator beforehand, so we've got something to do.

Now, would you happen to have a picture of what the assembly should look like? Like I said, the front lighter is in pieces, and I've found a couple different ways to reassemble it.

You should have two pieces. The piece you typically see and put the lighter into and then another piece that looks similar but is a tube. Put the two together so the tube fits over the lighter socket, it'* only job is to hold the socket to the plastic.

Auto parts stores have replacements for about $6.99 I replaced my front one with theirs. Works great. No need to mess with trying to reassemble one from 1997

I took out the intact rear lighter, and used that as a guide to reassemble the front one. When I plugged it all back in, and pushed the fuse back into place, there was a healthy blue spark a few seconds later. Thankfully, the fuse blew.

I think I will. XD

I'd argue that I had a reference to rebuild it from, but so much for that little "spark" of knowledge. Thanks for the tip!

Oops I forgot to mention you need a small pack of female blade connectors. The factory connector has to be cut off. Dont forget the center is the hot wire.
