I used to get the same warnings! My lights still worked though. What I think it was was water was getting in there and maybe shorting something?? (it rained every time I got the warnings). My tailight was very loose and didn't fit in all the way. The bolts were broken.

I got a new one and I haven't had any more warnings. I'd say I only got the warning 3 or 4 times within a year and a half.

Check 'em again. A flaky one only needs to cut out for a little while to trigger the warning. Also try turning on the parking lights, then watching your taillights while an assistant steps on the brake. Any lights that go _out_ when they're supposed to get brighter have a ground connection problem.

One of the usual suspects for this problem are the license plate lamps.
