Default tranny problem ?

Driving about 85 miles an hour home from work with tranny in 4th gear and rpm'* at 2200. which is totally normal, then out of the blue rpms shoot up to 3000. WTF. So I put the shifter into 3rd and it makes no change then back to 4th no change. So I assume the tranny is stuck in 3rd gear. I got off the next exit and checked fluid its full although not red it is light brown. Pulled back out on highway and stepped on it shifted to second fine then 3rd fine took it to 4000 rpm'* about 105mph and the car would not shift into 4th. The car would not shift into 4th gear, limped home at 65mph the rest of the way home. Fluid and filter changed about 17000 miles ago. Temp gauge wasnt hotter than usual about 190. The check engine light came on about 2 minutes before I got home but 25 minutes after it started doing it. Will find out what the code is today sometime. Probably shoudnt of written this till I get the codes but thought maybe this has happened to someone else.
Does anybody have any ideas, I dont know too much about these trannys I hope it is some kind of sensor or solenoid not the tranny.
Thanks,
Mark

did the fluid smell burnt? red = good, pink = okay, dark [usually black] = bad.

Smell it, if it smells burnt, you're going to need to flush the system.

You need to get a scantool on the car while driving to determine what the transmission is doing. Some faults (like TC lockup) set 'soft' codes, and will not illuminate the SES light.

I just finished changing the filter and fluid. Put in five and half qts of dexron3 and 1 bottle of Lucas Transmission stuff. The fluid was in between like a light brown and pink, but not black. Went to work today and back and it didnt slip out of 4th gear today, but I didnt go over 80mph. The ses light went off too, but I am gonna find out tommorrow what the code was at Autozone.
Thanks
Mark

That code has nothing to do with the trans. That'* your O2 sensor reading lean. You may have a fuel delivery problem, or a bad O2.

willwren you were right there was actually 3 soft or hidden codes:

po713 transaxle fluid temp high
po730 incorrect gear ratio
p1811 maximum adapt and long shift

Those codes mean anything to you guys? The local Cottmann transmission shop said the only thing to do is to take the tranny out and tear it down and fix whatever is wrong inside it. he quoted me $295.00 labor to take it out and put it back in and any parts it needs on top of that. That sound like a good deal or should i take it elsewhere?
