If your going to go to the point of dropping the pan to change filter and fluid. I would say go a little bit more and drop the shift accumulator and open it up. Clean up the cylinder walls, check the O rings, and put it back together. Adding a shift kit wont hurt either. https://www.gmforum.com/t278802/

Unfortunately Moody, the shift kit in your trans isn't the same as the 4T65. In yours...it requires a lot of stuff that means a full rebuild.

I posted a couple a while ago in my intro thread that I smelt gas from my Olds whenever I was around it. I checked around the fuel filter area (that'* where the smell was) but I couldn't find a leak. The gas lines going to the filter were quite rusty, though... I was at school today and during my break, I was sitting in the car with it running and I noticed a POTENT gas smell. I got out of the car and looked in front of the rear passenger'* side tire and, sure enough, there was a puddle of gas on the ground... The car needed to be inspected so I dropped it off tonight and they'll inspect it and fix the rusted out line too.
The weird thing is that I checked the fuel pressure about a week ago and it checked out perfectly... It was like turning on a light switch... BAM! And now it was leaking like a sieve. I'm not sure that this would affect my shifting, though, but I'm sure my fuel pump was working overtime to keep the pressure up!
I'll see how it turns out tomorrow.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out. Good thing you found it otherwise you might be walking now because your Bonnie was as moldering heap of burned out wreckage.

Dan, That was a very well put and informative how to on the transmision kit.
I have a 96 SE and the engine light is on, showing shift solenoid A is bad. I had it checked at a transmission shop, they said it is working. I did have the fluid flushed, but didnt drop the pan and change the filter. If I drop the pan, find that one of the shift solenoids are bad. Where can I find a detailed description like the one you did for the shift kit?
Thanks alot.

So it turns out that one of the lines coming off of the sending unit was rusted out... $400 later and I'll have a dropped tank and a new sending unit/pump installed... I wish I had a garage, I'd definitely do it myself, and I'd save so much money... Perhaps one day. :(
I'll check out filter/gasket kits for the tranny and look into doing a shift kit.
Nick
