Default MAF and TB questions

Car runs perfectly, I was just bored and fartin' around under the hood. I thought I would pull the MAF sensor and see if it needed cleaning. Two little filaments, and the one you can see from the side is thicker in the middle. I don't think this is residue, looks like it is supposed to be that way. Is it? Also, looking down the opening where the MAF goes, the TB is spotless as far as I can see to the butterfly. Does this area get carboned up or is it just on the other side of the butterfly? BTW, my MAF was attached with just two little bolts with those damn torx tamperproof heads.

Yeah, it'* the back side of the throttle plate that gets gunked up, because the EGR is on that side. And I'd invest in a T-15 security bit. Actually if you plan on doing much work, get a T-10, 15 and 20. Our cars have LOTS of torx fasteners it seems like.

Thanks. Yea, I went and bought an entire set of those darn things..$11.95. Like those "tamper prooof" heads were really going to stop me from doing my own work, and bring the thing into the dealer who would charge 80.00 an hour. Auto engineers are sometimes idiots.
