My 98 is making a bad whining noise, After WCBF the car has been leaking the majority of the PS fluid out of the resivor in a matter of days. Large puddle in the garage.

What is the easiest way to change the hose..I'm guessing its the 70 dollar hose vs the 12 dollar one that is bad. I dont mind spending a 100 and fixing them both assuming I'm doing the work myself instead of taking it to a mechanic. it is either something on the pump itself or one of the hoses. i'm thinking it is the hose that bolts on. but there is fluid everywhere and I degreased it and presure washed it and still cant tell where it is coming from.

So to my questions

whats the easiest way to pull the lines? just unbolt them while the PS pump is mounted? or pull the 2 bolts holding the power steering pump and disconnect them then?

My only fear is it is a seal on the pump itself is leaking, not looking forward to swapping the pulley over I'll probably swap a JY pump if thats the case but the price for the jy pump with the pulley is close to the GMPD reman price without the pulley (gmpd is cheaper on the power steering pump than napa/shucks/autozone by the way).

so any tips or tricks in replacing the lines? what end to unconnect first? Plan on getting doused in power steering fluid? :?

The dousing depends on where you are when you disconnect them.

Unhooking depends on your ability to get to them. it'* probaby easier to undo them at the rack connection and pull the whole mess out at one unit. (Pump and lines).

ok thats what I was thinking. Off to the dealer tomorrow to replace the lines. Lets pray its not the pump itself.

Honestly..I wouldn't replace one or the other w/o determining which it is... and yes..I fully understand the point at which a man says "I can't tell and no longer care"

replaced the lines..not that fun of a project..still has the leak

Took the old one out on my lunch break and have a new one from the JY with 20k waiting to go in. the 2 cooling lines from the dealer (even with my discount) were 3 times the cost of the pump. Oh well, newish pump, brand new lines, this car should go another 200k with this setup.

Replaced the pump last night, took me about an hour and half. 15 minutes to remove it, the rest of the time trying to get the new one lined up, I did not remove the passenger tire but instead tried to hold it in place while I tried to line the bolts up.

I think the easiest way would be to remove the passenger side wheel and splash shield.

its nice to finally have a 100% leak free car.
