Is it possible that you can change your trnsmission fulid and filter too often?

I change mine about every other oil change :lol:

Is it hard to change the tranny filter on these cars? How many quarts of tranny fluid do they hold?

Nope, probably not necessary, my minimum is 15k, and like to think the max should be 30k. Can't hurt!!!

No, not to hard, messy yes, but hard no. Count on about 7 quarts with a filter change.

The techinfo is well written and covers the details well. Be sure to use jackstands.

Remember you reuse the rubber gasket. If you don't have a drain pan, some suggest a plastic tub from Walmart kitchen department, Sterlite,with sides 4-5 inches tall and that will hold 6 quarts and more -- a fairly large area because the fluid tends to come out around the pan in places you don't expect all at once if you don't loosen bolts right. I've used the Walmart trans fluid; I trust it more than no brand versions at local auto parts stores.


Refill trans carefully. Don't overfill. Put in 5 quarts until you're at the bottom of the dipstick and then run until warmed up for a proper check and fluid adjustment.

The filter has a little seal that comes with it. You old one may not come out easily. I reuse the old one sometimes.

I have been doing a 6-9K mile swaps since I have had the car in 2003. That trans is very clean ;) I've put on 93,500K since 2003 8) Never had a problem ;) Do the math, lol :lol:

That little grommet that sits in the trans and holds the neck of the filter is a PITA!! My theory is, if it comes out with the old filter (like it did Saturday) then I put the new one in. However, if it stays in the transmission, I reuse it. That part right there is the hardest of it all. I'd rather take a bath in trans fluid then deal with that (*^^&$*&^$%$@! thing! :evil:

As for the gasket, I do not resue the old one. I go to NAPA, get the kit, which includes the neck grommet, filter and a new gasket. I have never resued the old one. If you go to Napa, which is where I almost all my parts, the computer tells you to reuse the O.E.M. gasket. I don't have the OEM orginial :)
