engine is in touble
well, my car was making a noise in the engine for a few days, and after removing the oil pan, i discovered that i had spun a bearing on either the 4th or 3rd piston (can't remember which one), which scratched my crank...so either, i get a new crank and new connecting rod, take the motor out and all apart and rebuild it, or get a new motor for somewhere between $1500 and $2000. everyone i've told was surprised that a 3800 spun a bearing...i'm rather shocked myself...any input on which option is better?

How about I move your topic to the Mechanical section? General Chat isn't for mechanical topics.
In the meantime, can you tell us if you ever had an upper intake manifold failure that you know of? Or before you owned it?
Moving to 92-99.

At the same time, have you considered replacing with a junkyard motor? Many times the cost is well worth working with slightly used.
While you are telling us about stuff... let'* ask a few maintenance items
Normal oil change ? in time and miles
Harsh driving?

go ahead, move it, i was unsure of what section to post it in...
i changed the oil regularly, but i doubt it was by the previous owner (i;ve only had it since aug. 2006) judging by the looks of the oil pan. i wasn't driving really harshly, but i wasn't driving like a grandma either....i don't think i was that mean to the engine. i haven't checked local junkyards, but i think i will be better off with just a new crank and rod, cuz i don't have a lot of money. right now i'm just slowly working on taking the current motor out.

How bad was the damage to the rod and the crank journal?
If the rod is not that bad you can have it resized and or take all of them in to have them checked... If the crank is not that bad it can be turned down and oversized bearings used..
But when you put it back together you have to be absolutely sure to properly torque the caps and make sure you have no crank bind before you install the rods/pistons
You may also want to look into the price of a crank kit, and may need to tear the engine down... By the time you have spent the money on doing what you plan you'd have paid for a low milage 3800 II from the yard

well, the new cranks that i've found went for something like $150, and with berings, some new gaskets, etc., it'd something like $300...and 3800s that i've seen on the internet went between $1500 and $1800, so i dunno...of course a new motor would be a heck of a lot easier...still in taking the motor out though....
