Timing chain or belt

'95 Bonneville sudden power loss and engine noise. Anyway to check timing on these cars?Or Is it all the CPS? Do they run a belt or chain for timing and are the gears plastic, like GM is famous for? Thanks

Metal gears, metal chain, with a tensioner. It's rare to have to mess with it. Have you checked for codes yet?

i think the gears are teflon coated

The teflon gears are what I was wondering about. I drained the oil and in addition to having some metal flake, there are also what appear to be a few little plastic looking pieces. I know GM used to use those metal/teflon gears in their older cars. I haven't had any codes run yet. I'm in a smaller town and don't want to drive it much. The other bad thing is the gas in the oil. I'm thinking something serious let go. Ring or something. No smoke out the back of the car though. Seems to idle fine, just a lot of noise and no power. Valve train is all tight, I'm thinking that with the gas in the oil I might have wiped out a bearing somewhere. In my experience though you usually don't loose power with a bad bearing you can hear the rod knock before hand and still rev the piss out of it until it blows.
