Tie rod end question
I have a liitle slop in the front end of my '95. It seems to be coming from the left side inner tie rod end.
I can't see the actual tie rod end because of the rubber boot covering it. Is the inner rod end like the outer rod end, or is it completely different? Does the car actually have an inner tie rod end, or does the tie rod attach directly to the rack and pinion somehow? Is it difficult to replace the inner end? Thanks for any help and info. Dave |
They are seperate from the rack and pinion, but it's a bitch to get out. It's different from the outer joint as well , here are some basic directions after going over the FSM just to see what you're getting into.
To remove or disconnect the inner tie rod Remove Rack & Pinion assy Disconnect both Rack & pinion Boot/Breather Tube Remove shock damper from Tie rod and slide back onto rack (rack must be supported during tie rod removal to protect rack) THen remove the tie rod with wrenches. Sounds fun..... :? |
I need a boot on one of mine. I think I'll just send it over to Mechanic Dan...buddy supreme...lol

There is a special tool for removing the inner tie rod ends. Your local parts store should be able to loan you the tool. You and a friend should be able to do it in a couple of hours.
You will also need a pickle fork for the outer tie rods. An impact wrench wouldn't hurt either. You wont have to pull the rack out. |
Thanks for the replies and info everyone. Sounds like a real fun job. Yea, right!!
