Default Tranny swap Q'* / Poll

Wondering if I should pull engine/tranny or drop just the tranny?

I dont have a engine hanger - can I substitute my cherry picker for the hanger? (If I do just the tranny)

The reason Im thinking whole drivetrain is because the engine has an oil leak - hopefully from the rear seal and not the oil pan. I thought it would be easier to replace pan gasket (if thats the leak) with engine out. From reading the posts its about equal labor between the two. Any comments suggesttion would be valued

Honestly..

You don't need a metal hanger. A couple pieces of 4x4 to put on the radiator support, firewall...and then span front to back of the engine with another piece of 4x4. Then chain the motor to it. Total cost will be one 6' length of 4x4. My motor sat like that for a little over a week.

You won't be able to use a cherry picker to hold the motor while you pull the trans because there won't be room to sneak the tranmission out unless the car is very high in the air.

I would nearly put money on your rear engine cover leaking.. When the engine/trans is apart..tighten the 10mm bolts on the back of the engine around the rear main seal. The rear main is probably good..it'* most likely that cover is loose.

BillBoost37, Thanks for the info on 4x4 action. Thants what I will do - I have plenty of them laying around. I think that will work fine.

I hope you are right about the rear engine cover, Sounds like you have seen this before.

Just picked up the used tranny last night - I couldnt believe I found one with 76k on it 550.00 for it, 100.00 core. The best part is it comes with a one year warrenty parts and LABOR!!! So if it fails they replace it - no questions asked. It only took 6 months for it to show up in my town. The 95'* are hard to come by.

I went after an oil leak (thinking pan gasket) for nearly 2 years. Then swapped two motors and a trans in under two months..

Things are still fresh..lol

When the trans was done.. my car sat for two weeks... not with a 4X4..but a 2x4 on it'* side. Personally..I won't suggest that to you..a 4x4 is plenty thick though.
