Throttle Body Removal Problems on 94SE
 

I tried to remove my TB on my 94SE this weekend to clean it and install new bracket and ran into some issues that prevented me from removing it and caused me some concern.

I removed the rubber elbow and the connectors to the MAF, TPS, and IAC. I loosened the 3 nuts that hold the TB on the studs but I could not remove the TB because there is a bracket that is held on by 2 other nuts at the bottom most nut location on the TB. I couldn't get those 2 nuts off either with a wrench so as to remove the bracket and couldn't get a socket in there because of a heat shield that was in the way. Any ideas here.

Also when I loosened the 3 nuts, a few drops (5-6) of coolant dripped out between the TB and the plastic intake (I guess that's what it is). In any event, I couldn't get the TB off because of that bracket so I buttoned everything back up. I did clean the MAF filaments with alcohol but that was it.

Any ideas? Car is absolutely stock 94SE with VIN 1G2HX52L4R#######.

The L27 is the worst for this. You must remove the exhaust heat shields. I've done this twice in L27's now, and hate it in comparison to the L67. That bottom nut under the TB is a royal pain.

Do the drops of coolant mean anything serious. I have no idea what passages there are in the throttle body as I never got it off.

Coolant flows from the black plastic upper intake manifold into the TB to pre-warm it for emissions purposes in cold weather. Keep an eye on it if you broke that loose. I would expect it to leak. You have a new gasket already?

Yes, I have anew gasket and now I guess I'll go back in and see what is involved in taking the heat shields off so I can finally get the TB off. Are there any tricks to removing the heat shields?

Removing everything else wasn't that bad. I removed the MAF screen and the TB looked a little dirty inside but not horrible but obviously I could see it all.

Some swiveling socket pieces will help, or a wobble extension. It's possible to do without removing the heatshields. How do i know? Damemorder's brother did it in the time it took for me and Dame to essentially finish my front supsension. :lol:

Yes, it can be done without removing the heat shields. I did it on my 93. Use a box end wrench and have some patience!!

Patience....There's something I lack...lol
