thermostat

Last summer I bought my 92 sse, I went to change the thermostat and there was'nt one, does anyone know the affects this has? besides taking forever to get up to temp. It did'nt throw any codes.

yeah when i bought my '89 there was no thermostat..and it will never get up to temp.

to the best of my knowlege, (i know i will be corrected), i causes poor gas mileage, makes the engine wear out the oil faster (it has no chance to burn off the crud), faster engine component wear (pistons, etc) and things like that. There are probably some other things, but they are not coming to mind...

unless of course you have some serious Intense type engine mods, then you usually want a lower thermostat like a 160. But I would not reccomend running without one. It was put there for a reason, it could have some long term effects.

Thanks John

Ritchey I see you mod list... You might just as well go ahead and get the Stant 180F thermostat... I think Advance autoparts will sell it..

They had to search for it, but I think the PN for you will be the same as it should be a 44mm thermostat... Stant Part Number 13848, you will also want the assoiated gaskets to go with the thermostat for your car..

Do you think a 160 would be to low? or get the 180 and drill it?

Ritchey 03-28-2006 05:40 PM

I currently have the 195 in now.

Get the 180, and possibly drill...

The 160 will be too low...

I agree.

You might also want to keep an eye on the Accel coil packs. They don't have a great reputation here. Low spark voltage and early failures.

Can you do me a favor and check the primary and secondary resistances of each coil so we can add it to our Techinfo article?

Will do, get back to you a little bit later.
