Default Helping my friend.

Hello,
I am new here and obviously came for help.
Trying to help my friend to fix his 1998.
He kept loosing coolant and overheating, after some quick research I learn that it'* very common problem for this cars.
Anyway to make long story shorter, we decide to save the car, and try to fix it.
I print out Auto Zone removing/installation instruction and now get to the point that I need advise how to remove lower part of intake manifold. It does seems to me, that I remove all bolts and EGR pipe, but thing is not moving, when I gently trying to pry it up.
It feels like it welded all together, I afraid to push harder, and brake manifold or even worth, cyl head, etc.
Am I missing something, how did you guys take this part out?
Thanks in advance, we trying to do good thing and save another Bonneville from death
Alex

First, take a wet dry vac and vacuum all the coolant out throught the thermostat hole so it all doesnt go into the oil. Then triple check to make sure everything is removed (brackets, etc) then pull up fairly hard on the lower intake, it should come loose and come right off.

Also, you are also replacing the black upper intake, right? They do fail and might as well replace it while it'* off.

yes get all that coolant out of there... drain as much as you can...

did you remove the coolant elbow ... would be on the far left of the manifold in your picture

There a couple of "hidden" bolts that you will find in the opposite corners of the manifold underneath all of the coolant.

Here is a link to some pics

As EchoSSEi mentioned, there are bolts in the upper left, and lower right of the lower intake manifold, hidden in all that oil in your picture.

They're #5 and #7 in that diagram.

Is it black 90 degree thing? Yes I saw it, was wondering how to get it romeve. Cause it looks really hard to get into. I wasn't even sure if its came out of the lower part of intake.
Thanks for heads up.

Guys, I really appreciate your input. I don't read everything yet (at work), but I already see that I miss 2 bolts and the coolant elbow
I will keep this thread updated, how my friends car comming along.
BTW, where base on your expiriance, best place to get the correct parts, and what parts do we need? In addition to intake mani replacement, I like to change fuel lines quick disconects (they are licking), rad, cause its original and looks un-healthy, cam covers gaskets, and couple vacum lines. Also what selicone best to use when replacing the gaskets?
Thank you all.

Get the lower intake manifold gaskets from a GM dealer. (GM Aluminum Frame Lower Intake Manifold (LIM) Gasket set: GM PN# 89017816.) That part no. and others are provided in this Techinfo article that you need to read. It will tell you all about the problem and has links showing how to fix it. http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...e=article&k=38 If you have time, order the APN upper intake manifold (UIM) kit referenced in the above article. If you are in a hurry, you will have to settle for a Dorman UIM kit from a parts house like NAPA or Autozone. Unlike the APN kit, with the Dorman you will get no reduced diameter stovepipe that you can use in the '98, though. Shop around at local radiator shops to buy a new radiator. I have found they can usually match the prices of on-line radiators (about $110) and you don't have to wait on the mail or pay shipping. Get the coolant elbow from Dorman Help line - it will come in a package with two elbows (99 and newer use both on the tensioner assembly). While you are at the dealer buying the aluminum frame LIM gaskets, pick up an o-ring for the water-pump fitting on your tensioner assembly. It is possible to change the o-rings in the fuel disconnects but make sure you get the right size and that they are rated for service in gasoline. Get the rocker arm cover gaskets, vacuum line and RTV silicone from any parts house. Any sensor-safe RTV silicone is OK for the corners of the LIM gaskets and for the rail pieces. Black or Hi-Temp copper will work fine. A Chilton'* 28200 repair manual may come in handy, too. Flush out all the orange Dex and refill the cooling system with spec G05 (mixes with any color) coolant according to this fill procedure: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...=article&k=100

Well, guys, as I promises, here the update.
First of all thanks to all for sharing valuable info, without you, I won't be able to do what I did.
Remove everything I was planning to.
After taking these 2 hiding under the coolant bolts out, LIM came out with no troubles at all.
Of course coolant elbow snap in both places, but who cares, I get another one, no biggie.
I also decide to replace the rad (its original from 1998, prolly shot, no reason to fix all coolant system and keep the old unit). I noticed that hard lines coming from trany to the rad is leaking
a lil, were best place to get them? After all, I don't want to cut corners at all.
After working for years on Supras I6 engines, it seems to be kind of difficult to get to the 3 of the spark plugs next to the firewall, any recommendation, how to remove them, and what plugs should I use, any preferences?
The vacuum hose connecting fuel regulator to ?, broke off, do you guys know the part #?
My next step is to clean LIM and do some maintains to injectors (I will also need part # for the fuel injectors O-ring). BTW what you guys use to clean injectors (except sending them to special shop, this part I know).
Again thanks for help and here some pictures, if you see anything you like to add/point, I'll be glad to listen.
God bless you all for care!
Alex
