While the typical problem would be looked at as a possible bad coil pack, check the #6 plug. We only have 3 coils and therefore (I forget what Don said it was called) both plugs fire at the same time. One spark is wasted, one is used.
Therefore check #6 and the coil tower on #3, it'* also possible the tower is broken or cracked. It may also be your ignition control module.

Chuckiec4 has a 96 bonne SE at home also. I looked up the part numbers and the coil packs are a different number between the 97SSEi and the 96SE ignition coil packs, but, would he be able to use a pack from the 96 to see if the pack on the 97 is bad? I know it'* a different part number, but if it fits, would it work?
Thanks.

The SSEi packs throw a hotter spark. For testing, it will be fine. If that doesn't work out, pull all three coil packs and swap the ICM located underneath them.

ChuckiC4 took 1 coil pack off the '96 SE and replaced the #3 / #6 coil pack on the '97 SSEi, and the check engine light went off, and the car runs good again.
He is planning to replace all 3 coil packs, and probably the ICM as well. Do you guys suggest a specific brand? or should we get OEM? Where do you guys buy your coils? Is there a good source for good prices on good parts?
Thanks for the advice, and for helping us get this Bonne up and running again. I can't tell you what a relief it is to see him happy again.
