I searched the forums and didn't see this question answered anywhere, so i apologize if it was and i just didn't see it.

I have a 1994 SSEi, need to replace the Master Cylinder- All the auto shops say there is a 6.5" or 8" part that fits. I called the GM dealer and he said (based on my VIN) i need GM25632708. The problem is, i don't want to pay for a GM part but nobody seems to know if that part is 6.5 or 8". Anyone know or have a Napa/Autozone/Advancedauto part number?

Related question, my manual seems to imply that with ABS you need to have a scantool in order to bleed your brakes, or else "you'll have to have your car towed to a shop that has one to reset the ABS". That seems wierd, but then again i've never changed a Master Cylinder before. Thoughts? Thanks a ton. Dealer wanted $620 for the job.....

They used two different ones. Easiest way to figure it out is to measure it. Measure the length from the booster to the end of the master.

I think its a 6.5 inch master cylinder. Measure to make sure though. I went to Autozone and purchased a new one, not a rebuilt, followed the instructions included on how to install it. Brakes worked great since then. I did not even have to bleed my brakes. I bleed the master cylinder well though following the instructions. Also at autozone the new one is cheaper then the rebuilt one by about 10.00 and it already has the resovoir attached. This was my first time working on brakes ever and it was pretty easy.

Even if you do need to take it to the dealer and have it bleed it would be much cheaper. Think about a 65.00 part + 50.00 tow and im sure it wouldnt cost more then 80.00 or so to have it bleed. That would be 195.00 instead of 620.00. But the ABS or the brakes on mine didnt even need to be bleed. It wasnt loosing fluid from anywhere. It would just slowly sink to the floor unless I keep pumping them. Drove that way for almost a year before I got tired of it. Crazy for the Bay Area.

You absolutely "need" to bleed your brakes fully. You introduced air into the lines when you unhooked them air was allowed in at that point. They can seem good, but you will still have air and it'* not good to allow that to stay in there.
