Default A/C Compressor Cycling 95 w. manual climate control

I'm having a problem with the A/C on my 1995 88. Bought the car recently and have been busy sorting out other problems (UIM, master cylinder, etc...) and finally got around to this. The A/C compressor cycles every 5-20 seconds when the A/C is on. The car has the manual climate control (twist *****) I thought it might be low on freon, so I evacuated the system and pulled out 2 pounds, which is what the underhood sticker calls for. The system held a vacuum for 15 minutes, so I went ahead and refilled the system. 2# and it still cycles. The A/C blows as cold as any car I've owned, and I don't get any blasts of warm air. I even added a couple additional ounces to see if that might trigger the compressor to stay on, but no luck.

Any ideas what might be going on. It must be a hefty compressor, because I really feel the engine lag when it kicks on. It'* actally pretty annoying -- under acceleration it feels like the car is surging when the a/c is on.

Car has 57k miles.

Thanks in advance

I don't see what the problem is... my car does the same thing. Cycles on and off. My Neon does too. Sounds like you did everything right. It gets cold, and no leaks.

EDIT
Don't be surprised if you see this get moved. I do believe this should be in the

Some of the compressors cycle..some don't. Not sure which one would be on your 95. Jr'* probably knows..or had a good idea...

The high pressure cut out switch might be right on the edge of the envelope causing the compressor to short cycle continuously. just a thought, install a test gauge on the system high side to check for cycling pressure. That will tell you right away what'* going on with the compressor vs. system pressure.
