Default Chime, CHECK GAGES and Steering

Hi everyone,

I'm new on the board and I've got a problem with my recently purchased Bonnie '95 SE.
The problem is - when I turn the steering wheel all the way in one direction and back up (parking, broken u-turn, etc.) - I hear a chime going off continuosly and CHECK GAGES flickering (NOT blinking, flickering as a broken neon sign :( ). If anyone has any ideas, please post.
I also read here that it is possible to retrieve codes from onboard computers, but I can't figure how to. I think this may help me troubleshooting the above problem. If you can help please do

Thanks in advance,
Sasha

Welcome to the Forum Sasha!

It sounds to me that you have a short somewhere. You can retrieve codes on any of our Bonnevilles, but from 1994 up you need a computer diagnostic scanner. The technique used in the 1987-1993 Bonnevilles was dissarmed (taken out) by GM for the 1994 model year.

Also, this may be a BCM issue and not the ECM (Body Computer Module vs Engine Computer Module). I am not sure if the scanner automatically scans the BCM or not. PM (personal Message) Willwren, Jr's3800, Speedguy, or 99BonnevilleSE if they don't chime in on this thread. They (and others on this forum) can help you out better than I.

But welcome to the club!

You read out codes through ALDL? The problem is similar to short circuit.
The forum does not work with cyrillics. Write latin letters on russian.

Thanks for replys guys. My engine died on Monday, so I'm getting that replaced :(
Hope the problem goes away then..

On the codes: The car has 16-pin OBD2 connector, but the label on the hood says OBD1 certified. What tool can I use that doesn't cost a lot of money?

Hmmmm, I think I'm a bit stumpped here..... I know my scantool will not scan the BCM as its a cheap scantool... But am not sure if the BCM actually controlls the system monitor on our SE bonnevilles... I think its just full of idiot lights.. And the chime only goes off when one of the gages falls into the red or the orange shaded area.. I think it could have to do with the cluster its self.. I could be wrong on this one though.... Maybe we can get Will to jump in and give his thoughts.. ......
The chimes for the drivetrain related problems actually come from the PCM. If your oil pressure gauge dies, for instance, you won't get a chime, but if the sensor does, you will. If it'* an engine related problem, you should have a code to go with that chime. After the engine swap, it probably won't be an issue, unless it'* a problem with a component that won't be swapped. After the engine replacement, your mechanic will scan it for you. As far as the BCM chimes go, you got me. I haven't been into that mess yet. I'm OBD I anyway, and I know my scan doesn't get that detailed. I THINK the FULL OBD II compliant can read the BCM, but only certain scan tools. Somebody more familiar with those may have to jump in here. Drifter?

The '95 SE has analogue guages jsut like the SSE and SSEi--it just doesn't have some of the features such as compass and Boost guage.

All '95'* are OBD I compliant, but being a transition year, we had the OBD II connector. OBD II scanner will work, but it will not give all the info that it was designed to. OBD I scanner will work, but you need an adapter. Confused yet? I am!
