A/C raping MPG'*
i know, another a/c post.....sorry lol
but i was just a bit shocked with i figured my mpg'* for this week {the first week with a/c} and noticed that they dropped from 17 to 14...i know its suppose to drop some, but it just seemed like a lot to me. Is that about the normal decrease? or is my car drinking too much gas?

I believe that you car is actually rated 17 city and 25 hwy...
But you should do better than that...
I'm not SC'd, but I even manage 18-20 in town with the AC on... And 32 on the road with the AC blowin cold...
What has been done to your car in the last few months in the way of tuneups and the like?

Doesn't sound too far off. The 17 mpg, that must be all city driving? Air conditioning will take a minimum of 5 hp from your engine.

yeah, its city driving, forgot to include that.
Haven't done much tune-up wise...cleaned throttle body the other day and flushed coolant. Other than that the car runs pretty much fine...plugs look good and everything. I've only had the car a few months, but from what i can tell the previous owner did take pretty good care of it.
But if i'm rated 17mpg'* city, then i guess 14 is about average with the a/c, eh? any suggestions to improve mpgs?

Basic tune up items... Air filter, plugs, wires, O2 sensor...
The car you have is rated 17ish city... Most of the ones I have seen do better than the rating
If you are doing a lot of starting and stopping and stop and go traffic that can mooch off the MPG'* tho...

Humm I could bearly tell the difference in fuel mileage. I went from about 400 miles on tank on 14.589 gallons to 384 on 14.2 gallons. But it also got much hotter which the water pump has to work more and the fan to cool the car down which makes the alternator work more which all take more fuel to run. My milage is mostly highway if not all highway.

On Mythbusters they did a show about how driving with your windows down gives you worse MPG than driving with your AC blowing. I haven't tested this myself (as my AC doesn't work), but they proved it in their test vehicle.

Yes you use less fuel on the road if you leave the windows up and run the AC.... On top of that there is a certain point where the inside of the car cools enough for the compresso to cycle on and off as opposed to running all of the time, so its not too bad...
When I did my 32mpg that was with the AC running

With city driving you might be rated at 17, but lets admit it. Sitting still is sitting still and kills mileage.
Mythbusters, yes you're car is more aerodynamic with the windows up. Open, there'* a ton of wind resistance. I'm not sure about that 5hp, but have nothing to go on.

I don't know, I do all 55MPH and some city driving and get 27.8 MPG without AC and windows down and around 25.4 MPH average with AC. also, at 55 MPH I get an instant mileage of 38 MPG according to my DIC, and I get 32ish MPG instant with the A/C on...
