Question 1992 ssei security light

Hi im corey im new to the site, i just got a free 1992 bonneville ssei from my neighbor and i have a problem. my neighbor has lost the keys ( Im thinking great) all i have to do is jam a screwdriver in there and start it but thats not the case.

The problem: the security light is on when i connect the battery and wont go off. I have no key so im trying to figure out how to get it started with out a key or the security keeping me from starting it. The car has been sitting for over 2 years and needs some work the title is also lost, i just wanted to get it running and drive it on my land.

Im new to these cars, but im a diesel technician, i work on cummins and VW TDIs

It would help me alot if some one could give me some advice on how to get it started.
ill post a picture and the VIN if that helps

Thanks alot

Here'* the way I would do it. Take the vin number to a dealership and ask them for the VATS key number. (Might want to use an old registration to show them the vin number.) Then buy a new ignition lock cylinder for the car. Take the steering wheel off and take the old ignition lock cylinder out. Put the new one in and put everything back together. Then take the keys that came with the new ignition lock cylinder and to a locksmith and get a "chip" (resistor) with the same number as what the vin number says put in the new keys. Then the car should start if there is nothing else wrong with the VATS system.

Other way, get a thermistor and adjust it to the resistance value of your key and wire it into the VATS wiring in the steering column. Then make a lever to move your ignition switch to start the car. Doing this way, will mean anyone could steal the car.

I think im gonna go with this option its probably the cheapest and its a old junker so no one will want to steal it haha.

But could you tell me or point me into the direction of what the color of the VATS wiring is or a post of someone already who did this.

Thanks roboticjunky

Take off the panel under the steering column. It should be a orange tube (kinda like shrink wrap for wiring) coming out of the steering column. There should be 2 white wires inside the orange tube. Then I would use the bullet type wire connectors to connect the thermistor to the 2 white wires that are not connect to the steering column anymore. Set your thermistor to the right resistance then plug it in. VATS is now bypass. There could be always be something else wrong with the system, but you won't know until you start it. This bypass usually fix the security light/not starting problem.

There'* a nice writeup detailing this in the Techinfo section. Disabling VAT'* is what you are looking to do.
