Is this possible to do? I know with getting a remote starter there is a temporary bypass, but I'm looking to bypass it for good. Also can a remote starter be used on our cars? Not the kind that the remote goes on the key chain, but the one that you connect to the starter,pull the trigger then the car starts? If so, could that work to bypass it? Maybe by connecting a switch to the starter in the car putting the key in acc flicking the switch then being able to drive. Or any other way to bypass VATS?
I got a remote starter, once it stops raining I'm gonna try it out.
Any ideas would really help.

the key uses a resistance. you need to find the resistance, once this is done you can get the correct resistance by installing a resistor or a series of resistors on the VATS wires. I think that they are 2 yellow or brown veryTHIN wires in the steering colum. IF you key ever goes bad then the car always reads the correct value. and that is also how the remote start is allowed to get power to the starter and the fuel pump

1) read resistance of key
2) duplicate resistance with as few resistors as possible to be within 5% of measured valued
3) locate orange "tube" within ignition harness. Strip orange sheathing to reveal two very small white wires. These are the VATS wires. Cut one of them.
4) wire standard automotive relay:

85 - VATS bypass output of remote start
86 - +12v constant
87 - splice to VATS wire that you did not cut. The resistor(*) needs to be in line with this lead
87a - "key" side of cut VATS wire
30 - "VATS module" side of cut VATS wire

When making connections to the VATS wires, I reccommend using some very small yellow butt connectors that can be found at Radio Shack. They are labled telephone wire connectors.


Some remote starters come with a package of resistors. Typically there is one resistor that matches each of the 15 or so values that GM uses. If you are friendly with a shop that installs them, ask for an unused pack of resistors. They should have plenty laying around.
