Replacing ignition barrel/tumbler...
I was wondering, since my new 95 SSEi doesn't have any keys, and since the key needs a chip in it, would I be able to pull out another steering column with a chipped key, and bolt it in? Or is there a computer in the car that would need to be pulled out so the key code is kept the same?

Why not just take your registration to your dealer and have them make you a new key instead of going through all that work?

Because they are not open until monday, and I would like to take the car for a test drive tommorow... plus I work excessivly long hours 6 days a week..

How does the VATS system work? I don't have a service manual for this year of Bonne, so I'm in the dark on this one...
If it works simply on a resistance through the key... what is the range that they use? I could easily wire in a POTs to tune it to what they security system wants to see....

It'* not that easy. There are 15 different resistance values...they are listed in techinfo. You can't even remove the entire module and bypass it as the PCM is linked to it if memory serves.
Your best bet is to go to a junkyard, and look for a Bonne with its keys still in the igintion, or at least in the car. Grab the key, along with it'* VATS module. Then solder in the chip from the key into your car, and swap the VATS modules. This would be the cheapest method for getting you up and running (unless the tumbler you are putting in has a provision for the chip reader. If this is the case, you can have a key blank cut with the same chip value as the JY key)

And again, where is the VATS located on these cars? I am in the dark on these models without a service manual yet...

Ah....VATS module is going to be under the passenger side "hush cover"...that big plastic tray that runs the length of the passenger side. There are going to be a whole lot of electronic boxes in that area. As I do not have access to my service manual, I can't give you a good explanation of what it looks like or where it is in relation to the other boxes...someone else hopefully will chime in with that info.

Ok, well thanks for the info... atleast its a start.. I found the resistance values for the VATS system, and am going to bypass the key check for now, I still haven't heard the car run... so this is just step one... LOL...

I don't think that will work Sandrock. IIRC the vats registers the pcm on first startup just so theives cannot swap in their own vats/key. I could be remembering wrong thou.
