I know this is a Bonneville page, but I need some help please. I had a 97 White Bonneville that got totaled and now have a 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2 Dr. with the 3100 engine. Two things are goin wrong with it. First, the Service Engine Soon light comes on ONLY if I reach above 50 and let it declerate back below 50, if I turn the car off after than and turn it right back on, the light is off until I drive past 50 again. The second thing is I can hear and feel this weird clunking noise whenever I go over a bump with my left front tire. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance guys.

The clunking may be a strut.

The 50mph thing sounds like the movie "Speed" where the bus had to stay above 50 or they'd blow up But seriously, have you tried pulling codes? Maybe it'* the TPS :?

If the SES light is on, then what you need to do is retrieve the codes. I'm not sure how to do it on that car.

I can't pull the codes, I've tried it at Autozone, they are the only ones around me that can read codes from my car, but to be able to read them, they have to turn the car off and then back on again. The light goes off as soon as you turn the car off and back on again. Then the light isn't on and there is no code to read. A Autozone guy told me he thinks it is the oxygen sensor and that I should start looking there for the problem

I would bet Autozone does not know what they are doing. Do you have a 16-pin connector or a 12-pin connector?

The codes will not delete themselves when you turn the car off.

Exactly. And I seriously doubt the O2 sensor knows what speed you're running. O2'* RARELY set an SES light or code, even when they're very tired.

I'd be thinking about your Torque Converter, considering that it'* almost always 50mph that it happens. That'* very close to the TC lockup speed.

arent the codes stored in a fault history file?

your theory makes perfect sense...TCC lockup is about the only 45-50 mph event I can think of

I don't have any kind of connector, the thing at Autozone that they use to read my codes almost looks like some kind of key that they plug in and turn right underneath the steeriing column. What could be wrong with the torque converter, again this only happens after I am cruising above 50 and slow down from any speed below 50. Thanks for all the help too guys, I really appreciate it. Also, the torque converter locks up at about 45 and does it all the time in the city when I am driving around, the light only comes on whenever I am on the highway. It'* really wierd, I hope nothing is wrong with the torque converter, cause I kind of can't afford it.

Yes, where they plug the key in, look at the connector and tell us if it is 12 or 16 pins.

Sorry, my bad, it is a 12 pin connector, I am going to try to go to Autozone again tonight after class and leave the car running with the SES light on when they try to read the codes.
