Security Light & OBD 1.5 Codes

I bought a '95 Bonneville off of CL to fix up. I replaced the intake plenum, plugs, wires, battery, and the blower motor relay and it started up and ran good. The security light was on but it started every time and drove fine...so I took the bulb out.... Let me know if that was a mistake....

Anyway the other night I drove it to a friends house and the CEL came on. I went by Napa and got their loaner code reader and found out I have the lovely OBD 1.5 or whatever the "official" name is. My wife used to have a '94 Grand Am GT with the same thing and I had to take it to a shop to get the codes out of it. My Bonneville has the OBD II connector just like the Grand Am did. I'd like to buy my own scan tool so I don't have to keep paying a shop to check it out. I saw some people recommending the Actron 9145/9150 saying they worked good on the 94/95 cars but not as well on the OBD II. After that I was looking around on Amazon and actron.com and none of the scanners really come out and address the 94/95 GM compatibility. Anyone have a recommendation for a scanner they KNOW will work?

Thanks!

Derek

I don't see what the difference could be between the 94-95 and 96-up functionality could be with the 9145.

I'd say buy it. It's one of the few scanners on the market that will test the OBD1.5 systems.

Most of the threads I found were of people saying the 9145 worked great on the OBD1.5 but only showed about half of the data for the '96+. I might try calling Actron and Equus about their current scanners....but I was hoping to buy a model or two older to save a few bucks...I doubt they'll be much help with part numbers they no longer sell.

well, if you can find a decent OBD2 only scanner, i can make you an ALDL cable to deal with any GM 95 and older....
