Security Light On - Car Won't Start

I went out to move my 98 Bonne out of the garage last night. Stuck the key in the ignition and tried to start it as normal and it was dead...nothing. I knew the battery wasn't dead because I had light and everything, so I grabbed my trusty owner's manual and thumbed through it...of course I found nothing about this feature, well anything in depth anyway. So I got on the web...
Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
Did it keep doing it or get worse?
How do you fix this problem?

I don't know where to even start mainly because I do not know what is causing it?

Its your key. The ignition switch isn't reading the resistor pellet that is inside of it. First step would be to clean your key real good and try again.

has a little chip on it right??

its known as VATS that isknown as resistor on your key. the ignition needs to see the resistance that the key provides to start the car. you need to clean your key with a q tip and some rubbing alchol and also clean where the key goes into the ignition. your key has a little chip on it right??

It should have the chip in it. Should he use rubbing alcohol or anything else along with the q tip?

nope just use the rubbing alchol with the q tip on the resistor to clean it and then use it in the ignition cylinder if you can get it in there, and make sure that it dries before trying to start the car

Dumb question, I know you said the security light was on but, is the steering wheel locked to?

RE:

I did not check to see if the wheel was also locked. I will try cleaning everything you mentioned. It has only done this once, luckity at home in the garage, but I fear it will happen again somewhere else.

Thanks!
