Default Security light

Well, my security light stays on for a full minute after ignition, which tells me I have a problem. Anyone have experience troubleshooting this bad dog, or is there something common to look for?

According to the book, it says it'* detected a PROBLEM with the system, and isn't working correctly.

Okay, I know the security system 'watches' the trunk.....I have a funny little cable (steel inside sheathing....mechanical) connected to a 2 prong electrical connector thats coming from the trunk latch. The little cable inside has pulled loose. Is that little gizmo part of the security? The remote opens the trunk, as does the remote switch on the pilots door (the door key doesn't, re-keyed?) so if all that functions somewhat normally, logic would dictate that other cable thingy is part of the security system.....might not arm correctly if it thinks there'* something wrong back there.....but the systems monitor sez the trunk is closed.

I'm so confus-ed.

Can you tell I just finished a 12 hour graveyard shift?

Funny that you post this now. I was out last night and there was an old lady who couldn't get her bonneville started (it was like a 91) so me, being as nice and sweet as i am, went to help her Her security light was on and it wouldn't start. So I got in and tried it, and the security light kept flashing. It turned out that it was because the door wasn't closed. So I closed the door and it started great. I don't know, are you doing something like that? lol I think your problem might be a bit more complicated, but i figured i'd share

Car starts just fine all the time, doors open or closed. I just have the warning from the system.....security light stays on for a full minute after ignition, then goes out.

Ok, this little gizmo cable thingamajigger IS part of the security system. It'* a tamper resistant switch that detects if someone messes with your trunk lock. If someone uses a slide hammer to remove the lock barrel, it engages the factory security system. The cable pulled loose, and the jb weld is drying right now. My security system thought the lock barrel had been removed from the car. I'll keep you posted when I get it all back together!

One hour later.....FIXED IT! Security system is working fine now. It was the tamper sensor for the trunk latch. All you '92-'99 SSE and SSEi owners should remember this one. The crimp on the lock barrel assembly for this little cable is pretty girly (no offense, Tamara). If you have a security light that stays on for a minute after ignition, check this little bugger. You can see it thru the center access hole under the trunk lid without taking anything apart. It attaches to a tiny slide assembly on the side of the barrel.

One more annoying little (*(*)*&(*&@ problem knocked out! Got my new O2 sensor installed, too, and the PCM reset, so we'll see what we see in the next couple hundred miles or so.

I have a 1999 SE and my Security light stays on forever. What is the security system. I am unaware of any alarm system or the like. Does that little thing on the ignition key have something to do with th security system? Would a low battery in my keyless entry device have something to do with this light?

in my case, one of the two wires inside the ignition frayed and separated. thus not reading the code used on the key pellet. others have said to try cleaning the surface on the key.
