Scanning Codes Tools

I am a newbie and have seen numerous references to using a scantool to determine engine problems. I think I understand that these tools are available at parts stores. However, I am confused as there seems to be a large variance in price for these diagnostic tools.
My questions are: What type diagnostic tool do I need to determine what is going on? Where do I purchase this tool? What price range should it be in?
I am concerned about buying the wrong thing and paying too much for it, too. I want to buy the right tool and not pay too much. Help? I bet there is a previous post on this but I couldn't find it through the search engine.
Thanks in advance! Stever :?:

What scan tool will work on your car depends on the year.

Please add it to your signature then somebody will chime in and help you out!

If you arent a big car buff I wouldnt worry about buying one, just goto autozone and have them scan them for you.

Unless you have a 94/95. Autozone can't scan those.

Yea, hmmm. I wonder if my scanner can?

At this point, nothing. However, I like to be prepared and if something comes up have the right tools available. I just noticed in reading the various posts that the gearheads often say "go get a scantool", etc. to do the diagnostics. Seemed reasonable to me, but I wonder where to go, how much to expect, etc. Perhaps I should just wait til something goes wrong and then worry about it. However, I am a type "A" personality and like to do things 'right now' when they happen. Also, as this vehicle (93 SSEi) is my daily driver I need to have it on the road. Thanks a bunch!

Scanning Codes

I have a 94SE. Are there any parts store chains that CAN scan codes on a 94? The local dealer wants $40+ just to scan my car.

Any other options other than buying a scan tool myself?

I think that most parts stores have the capability, just not the know-how. They need an OBD-1 compatible scantool with a 16-pin cable. Most stores will see the 16-pin cable and automatically get the OBD-II tool. Wrong!
