EGR gone bad
Hey there,
The local Chevy dealer service talked me into replacing my intake gaskets & afterwards I started getting a SES code 44 (lean O2) after idling for awhile, the idle is now real rough, & the gassy smell prevails. They now say the EGR valve needs replaced, & of course it'* entirely coincidental that this happened after the intake work.
Anybody see any scenario where the intake gasket change could damage the EGR or otherwise make it go bad?
Anyway, I can probably get them to put on a used one that I find. Just to be sure, does the supercharged 1993 Bonneville SSE use the same EGR valve as the non-supercharged engine?
Thanks

Spray the EGR tube with carb cleaner while the engine is running. Willing to bet there'* a vacuum leak. The RPM will go up if there is. The EGR tube connects to the LIM and that woudl have been pulled to change the gaskets.

Depending on the EGR Valve code you pulled narrows down our lists of suspects.
I have no idea what a "code 44" is. The way in which the trouble codes are organized is by "P0100" for example. Where the 4 digit number tells us what the issue is. Do you happen to know the code you pulled?
Onto the EGR Valve... I wouldn't say it'* rare, but I HIGHLY doubt your EGR Valve is bad. Seemings as how they just replaced your intake gaskets, it'* very easy to break or crack the EGR hosing to the LIM.
Like stated above, spray some carb cleaner around the EGR tubes, I bet you find that your idle jumps up.
Report back with your findings. : )
Edit -- Looking back I don't know the code numbers for ODB 1. You may be correct, as I was rambling about OBD 2.

Thanks for all the replies. I need to take it in tomorrow to a Pontiac dealer mechanic to get the rebuilt supercharger oil changed, after having that put on thanks to another misdiagnosis from that Chevy dealer, though it is much quieter now. I'll check w/ the Pontiac dealer on the rough idle, etc & see what they diagnose.
I did spray some carb cleaner like you said, & the rpm did rev up once, but I couldn't get it to replicate. The tube has a sleeve on it - does that need to be removed 1st?
Yes, it'* a real gassy smell - can even smell it inside the car. & yes, I scanned it w/ the old system at O'Reilly'* & got the code 44. Here'* what "Mrfixit-Bob" says (covers alot of possibilities): GM ECM Code 44

Actually found out last night that one of my o-rings are bad on my fuel injector on cyl. #6. Causing me a rough idle.
Also, this makes sense as far as the code you are getting, because if there is un-metered air entering the engine.. the same amount of fuel is going to be added to only the amount of metered air that the engine is bringing in, which is leaving you with a lean condition since there is more air expected than fuel in the engine.

Hi Ya'll!!!
In 93 the EGR tube come up off the front exhaust manifold into the EGR and then out of the EGR and into the front and top of the supercharger right behind the throttle body.
EGR tubes in general are thin and don't take well to bending or moving. To change the LIM gaskets the SC would need to be removed and that tube would be disturbed. This type of thing is normal wear and tear when changing gaskets. I doubt it was negligence on the tech'* part.
I've broken my share of Series 2 EGR tubes.

Thanks again. In retrospect, I never should have ok'd the work on the intake gaskets nor the supercharger nor the new water pump, tensioner/idler pulley & belts. I think it was pretty unnecessary & threw off the harmonic balance of my 65k miles Bonny. My fault for mentioning the rattling charger & some fluid leaks on my last inspection. Now
I know from here that a rattling charger is pretty normal & ok.
Anyway, the Pontiac dealer couldn't find any problems, even w/ the strong gassy smell, because they couldn't get an SES code now. At least they didn't charge me the $100 for diagnostics.
Tech remarked on invoice that he checked gas tank, lines & injectors on rack & no leaks found. Service guy said no vacuum leaks, though fairly possible they didn't do a real thorough troubleshoot.
I tried again spaying carb cleaner around tube & hose but no rpm rev-up. Looking at the EGR valve, it looks like even a novice like me could put one on. I'm thinking of getting a used one & trying it. I'd be paying twice as much for a more thorough diagnostic.
Is trying another EGR for about $50 the way to go? Are there installation instructions for it on here?
