Give me all the #'* off the metal tag on the side of the trans. I might be able to look it up for you in the manual. If no tag, you may have to go back and look at the RPO sticker in the trunk of the Olds. You will either have the RPO FW2(3.06) or F17(2.84).

Ok, got your info, looked it up in my manual. According to the broadcast codes you gave me
Olds Tranny
6ASW=2.84 Ratio
Your Tranny
6BXW=3.06 Ratio
BTW, the first digit in the broadcast code designates the year of the tranny. 6ASW=1996. If the Olds trans did come out of 1997, the code would read 7ASW. So, either the transmission you got was swapped out, or your seller was mistaken for the year it came out of.
Considering these trans are pretty much the same. Here'* what you need to do.
Swap differentials, gear sprockets and chain. This will put you back to the original 3.06 drive with no problems. Let me know if you need any help with this.

There are different codes for different ratio'*, but are assigned to different bodys, ie H body, G body etc.
