Default Problems in my '96 SSEi 4T60E-HD tranny

hey guys, well today i was driving around and doing about 35 in 3rd gear, then i stepped on it, the revs jumped as it begun to shift into 2nd but thent o my suprise it never made it into second. The rev'* jumped, but then went back to what they were at instead of downshifting. So that was kinda weird...i then started to notice a noise in 1st/2nd gear when i slow down to around 10mph. Its not so much of a noise as a feel...its almost like as the wheels are turning, at a certain point something rubs in the course of a revolution. And it is on the drivers side im noticing this.

The bigger problem is right after that, as i was driving around my temperature gage started to move up and up and up. Ive got a drilled 180* thermostat and it went all the way up to 250*. So i got scared and parked the car, then checked it out. I felt the radiator and it wasnt that warm, but then i felt the tranny cooler and almost burnt myself. I then checked the fluid and saw that it was kinda burnt. Its not quite a used engine oil brown, but its a more lightish brown. So what should i do? i know i should replace the fluid and the filter most likely, especially because that tranny has 200k on it now. Is their any places that i can buy shift kits for a 4T60E-HD? Or maybe just the clutches if mine are bad? Also what type of fluid should i use?

So im in need of some help becuase i really dont want to pay someone to rebuild my tranny. Any input on this would help!
thanks-

Brian

uneducated guess, clutch packs are heading south. Try a flush and dump some friction modifier in(lucas trans fix). It'* a band aid, but it may keep you rolling a little longer.

shift kit and clutches can be found at intense-racing.com, but i think you are beyong that... anytime the fluid looks brown and smells burnt start saving... be easy on it!

yeah...well i went for a few more drives tonight and for some reason the engine wasnt acting up and overheating...

i managed to pin point it down just from driving it around at different speeds and through curves, and ive found that the noise im hearing still is audible at even 45 miles an hour, then it starts to drone out any higher...im thinking its my U-joint, well, im hoping its my U-joint...i say this because ive also noticed that when i first put it in drive from park and coast slow, when i step on the brake for the first time i hear a kinda tick noise...same when in reverse, and its coming from the same area...ill ahve my car on a lift tomarrow and ill check it out

but im definately doing a full tranny flush over the weekend...anybody know how to empty the entire system or have a link to a thread with insturctions? and still what type of fluid should i use?

Bad news...you don't have a U joint to go bad. There are CV joints on the car..but I doubt with your description that they are a problem.

Sorry to say, time to start saving....at 200K though..it'* served you well.

ah, yes, CV joint was what i meant...sorry, im new to FWD cars...i was thinking drive shafts...so the odds are that it isnt the joint? hmmm...well my car isnt overheating anymore and its topping out at like 200* and then dipping down to like 185*...this weekend im going to just change the whole fluid system and throw in a new filter...worst comes to worst i can get a master ovehaul kit from napa for like 175 bucks...comes with all the clutches and seals and everything...

i guess ill let you guys know how it goes...still looking for other ideas... tho, and what type of fluid to use...also how to do the whole system...thanks-

Brian..
While on the subject of FWD vs RWD, something to keep in mind... the transmissions are much more complicated when rebuilding. Most mechanics I know are unwilling to attempt a FWD rebuild and send them out to a professional trans shop.

well today i put it up on jack stands and got under it...i checked out all the underside of the tranny and also checked out the CV-joints on both sides...the drivers side is actually fine, so im wondering if its actually something within the differential or the tranny that could be causing the rubbing noise because of horribly burnt fluid not lubricating the parts that need it? one thing i did find out which troubles me is on the passenger side wheel, when i put my hands on the top of the wheel and tug in and out, it rocks...not a good thing im guessing...the drivers side doesnt do that...what would be causing that? maybe a bad wheel bearing or something inside the tranny moving a little?

well im planning friday on using a lift at school and going for a full fluid change along with a filter and gasket change...ive got everything lined up but i was wondering if anyone knew how to drain all the trans fluid out of it, instead of just the 1/3 that comes out with the pan...is there a thread or a web site that would show me this? i could use it...i talked to jiffy lube and they said they use like a pump or something and dont even drop the pan for full trans fluid changes...

thanks-

Brian
