Can you elaborate on how you dropped the subframe and changed the trans without using a hoist (I'm picturing lots of jackstands or a floorjack supporting the engine, which scares me). If I can avoid using a hoist that will save me having to drive 4 hours each way to borrow my friends. I go to school at Villanova, but will be working on the Buick at home in CT.

By the way, you can't use my 97 trans in your 95, 97 is a one model year only trans as far as interchangeability. Plus I may rebuild the old one and install a limited slip somewhere down the road.

I used a cherry picker (engine hoist) to support the motor, jacked the front end up about 1 1/2 - 2ft in the air and put it on 2 jack stands.....and then un bolted the front spindles from the struts, the subframe is actually a 2 piece part. I don't remember off the top of my head where the bolts are to split the K frame *subframe* Chilton's would know. I did the swap exactly as the book said to... I skipped some steps here and there and got away with it. You can't support the engine any way with a jack or you'll f it up good and then you got a real problem.

I know your trans wouldn't work in my car, nor do I want it for my car, I got a 17k old trans in my car...you can have yours lol....I just wanted the bad one to tear apart and rebuild and see if I can't learn anything about these bastards.....Good Luck!

Actually the average age of a buick owner is 68.

But Yeah it is NOT really designed for those 5K shifts at every light........even with the HD version.

I put a trans in my bonne a few months ago......9 hours of actual work and a cas and 1/2 of beer and we had'er licked.....And that's with out a hoist and stuff....Hardest thing about this process is that these cars have a bolt that opposes the rest of the bolts going into the block that you need about 4 ft of extenstions and can only get to it from the right front fender well....Other than that...these cars are REAL easy. I dunno ANY way you can get these bastards out the top....but if you can do it, more power to ya and we want pictures!!! lol.

Hi,

I saw this old post of yours and have a question for you. I'm doing a similar R&R of the same transaxle and can't for the life of me locate the one stupid bolt that's installed in/from the opposite direction. I was hoping you could help narrow it down for me. Is it near the top or bottom? Or closer to the front of the vehicle, or more toward the firewall? Is there an access hole in the block somewhere? Do you go through the starter hole? Did you have to remove an exhaust manifold to see it or gain access to it? I can't find it anywhere and it's the last one that I need to remove. I'd be grateful for any info (or pics) as this thing's driving me absolutely crazy. Thanks!

mjw, Remove rf wheel and splash guard. Backwards bolt is at the 10:00 O'Clock position of the bell housing looking in from the passenger side. You need a 3-foot extension and an 11/16" six-point to get it. The 11/16 will fit more tightly than the 18 mm. May help to remove the oil sending unit, it will be very near to being in harm's way.

Here's how I get it:

mjw, please start a new topic titled: "How to get backwards trans bolt?" I'll copy this info there so people searching for the information will be able to find it. It's not a good idea to open up old threads.
