Default I hate the check engine light

Ok so yesterday I was driving home, going about 60 mph and the cars spedometer drops to zero and goes right back up to 60 and the car kind of makes a thump noise as it hesitatied for a second. Ran perfectly fine before and after that.

There was no light YESTERDAY

Then today, Im driving the car around all day and about an hour ago, the check engine light came on.

Any ideas?

that almost sounds like a power surge. Its like your cluster reset itself while driving, it shoudln't do that. Your spedometer is controle via PCM, so it is 100% electronic dependent. I havent the slightest idea at what code it might of thrown.

I wouldn't think so, a vacum leak would cause a sustained problem/symptom. Getting it scanned for any DTC is imperative. If just the speedometer fell to zero for a second in concert with the hesitation, I'd be looking towards the PCM. The other indications on the instrument cluster were not affected by this?

Interesting. The VSS is in the trans. If it'* not an electrical problem, it'* a trans problem.

Bill, Not sure of this on the 96-99 Bonns, I think the VSS signal is sent to the instrument cluster module via the PCM.

True. But if the sensor signal drops out?

going about 60 mph and the cars spedometer drops to zero
makes a thump noise as it hesitatied for a second
