my brother needs to replace the steering column in the '94 SSE i sold him last year. will any '92-'99 steering column work? does it need to be from another SSE or SSEi? or will one from an SE work? fwiw he doesn't care about keeping the steering wheel stereo controls since they don't work anyway. i think he just wants to fix the car to trade it in.

i can't believe how GM designed the supports for these columns cheapo die-cast type metal that breaks on the bottom support, and funky glued-in things for the top. how retarded.

You don't realize how many of those silly designs are out there working well.

I'd assume some roughness in the past of the car for it to break. However..the question is about swapping columns.

Aim for the right year as there may be subtle and small connector differences. Override the VATs while you are in there..and you shouldn't have too much trouble.

The above advice is well-founded. 92, 93, 94, and 95 all have distinctly different part numbers for the column with radio controls. Your year, and your year only.

you need to get the resistace of the Keys the car currently has....they get or make a resistor that has the same value and place it inline with the Vats wires

hate to bring up an old post but i did get it fixed without replacing the column. the yellow adhesive that GM injects into the top retainers (or whatever you call them) broke away which caused the steering column to fall out of place so i simply scraped all of that yellow adhesive off, cleaned it up with rubbinig alcohol and used a liberal amount of JB Weld to attatch the retainers. the only other column i could find in the salvage yard was also broken. the lower bolts holes were cracked off just like the one in my brother'* car now so i passed on it.

the JB Weld thing was the only fix i could think of. oh well, i think it will hold up just fine.
