pulling engine on bonneville, do I have to pull the starter?

I am removing the engine from my 95 bonneville. Since the starter is bolted to the block do I have to remove it to pull the engine?

I think it is also bolted to the tranny housing. At least there is a cover that is bolted to it and the block, IIRC.

Though it would help in removing the engine, but not necessary to remove the starter.

If I may ask, why are you pulling it?

The starter will have to be removed. Without removing it you can not easily remove the bolt that hold the flexplate to the torque converter. Also, you would not want to chance the cost of the starter and possibly break the nose cone off it when removing or installing.

Have to pull the engine to do bottom end rebuild.
thanks for the input guys.

Boosty, the starter does NOT have to be removed for engine removal. I just did this for the second time the other day. The 3 flywheel bolts can be removed or installed with the starter in place.

EDIT:
But it helps to have it removed upon reinstalling the engine.

Akamoose let me know if you have any questions about the bottom end rebuild. I just replaced my crank the other day.

pull the start to access the flywheel bolts
