Dealer quoted $300 to do it...this was when I had her in a last month ago to replace the upper intake, the service agent informed me it was leaking a little bit; it'* actually losing like a gallon every other week....what does this job involve, and how many hours?


I am now thinking this is what caused the temp to come up and ruin the upper manifold in the first place (that upper was only 2yrs old)! UGGGH!

Getz, hang for Mos....he'll blast you the text. This is a driveway job, and we'll talk you through it any way we can. There'* some info in Techinfo about this. Your water pump didn't likely cause your upper intake failure, but probably accelerated the ending days of it if you know what I mean.

A 180° thermostat will help with that.

OK, but I have to see how tough it is....a driveway job to some of you guys is like an engine rebuild to me...lol...remember, I opted to pay $250 to have the plenum installed!

FWIW, I had the dealer put the dorman upper in last time....hopefully that will be the last one I replace...I can't believe there'* a car part out there (other than wear & tear) thats prone to fail every 40000+......it'* just awful, I've had brakes last longer, it'* rediculous!

I don't know that we're "the best" (especially me), and Will'* probably drunk (your leadership in action!! ), But he'* right, we'll get you through this.

I've never done a water pump on a FWD car, but it'* usually just 5 or 6 bolts and some gasket stuff. From what I've seen here, the toughest part will probably be the belt.

But, since I got the 98 shop manuals, I think we can pull this off...

Water Pump Removal and Installation
96-99 Vin K Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
2. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container
3. Remove the accesory drive belt
4. Unfasten the four 8mm water pump pulley bolts, then remove the pulley
5. Remove the four 3/8 in. bolts and four 1/2 in bolts, then remove the water pump from the engine
6. Remove and discard the gasket and thouroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces
To Install:
7. Install a new gasket, the position the water pump over the gasket. Install the retaining bolts, and tighten as follows:
a. Tighten (1) bolts, shown in accompanying figure *dangit, not I gotta turn on the scanner* to 11 ft lbs
b. Tighten (2) bolts to 22 ft lbs
8. Install the water pump pulley and secure with the four 8mm bolts
9. Install the accessory drive belt
10. Connect the negative battery cable
11. Fill cooling system and check for leaks. Start the engine and allow to come to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks and top off the coolant.

We can suggest you spend the $15 on Haynes #28200 service manual. Should be available at an auto parts store where you live (off the shelf). At least one store in town should have it. It'* fairly common, and worth it'* weight in silver.

It'* got great pictures and diagrams, and will walk you right through it.
