Default 1993 transmission concerns (now with gross pix)

Ok, now that Jinx is running, it *finally* made the trip to Orlando, yes, under its own power

But not without issues

The scan tool picked up an issue with the transmission switch, showing it being in one gear range and the shifter being in another range entirely. There is also the fact of the fluid looking, well, sick...and there is way too much on the dipstick. Anyways, it drove and went through all the gears, but with major slippage and OD not wanting to kick in unless it felt like it. My question though is this: will the transmission switch, with it telling the PCM it is in a range that it really isn't, give different fuel maps or screw with the shift commands?

The adjustment is pretty straight forward. Let'* try that and a fluid/filter service to get the level correct.

Overfull
Overdirty
Unadjusted

I'd think those three may cause a bit of havoc.

Well, I took the scan tool and it showed that the switch is doing what it is supposed to do. So I went for a test drive with the tool going and it showed all the solenoids coming on and off too. But no sooner I came to a stoplight and ready to go, I get.....nothing. No movement in ANY gear I shut the car off, let it set for a minute, and started it up again, and got movement that way. Same thing happened on the return trip. At least I got it home

I will be looking into the fluid/filter change tomorrow, but I doubt it will help it. It feels too far gone.

Ok...then Don is right on his prediction of the trans.

I do know..being too far overful is as bad as being too low.

Wouldn't mind trying to do it myself, but I would need a garage to do that

So, today I have been gathering prices and whatnot. AAMCO talked upwards of 2100, another shop up to 2000 (but when I asked about the turnaround time, he said it would be in and out in a day...uh, huh.). Hell for that much I can go get another car, or better yet, money needed for a pending home purchase

Uhm, yeah, historically, the trans rebuilds have been pricey. Right in the area your seeing.

Stay away from AAMCO. They were the lowest bidder on my trans, but have the worst reputationfor quality.

Kinda torn at the moment. If I leave it alone, it will drive for a few miles before going south again. It'* funny...when it'* cold, everything seems to be ok...but drive it not even a minute, traction control kicks off and slippage becomes massive.

Pulled up TCC failure in the codes...whether or not the computer does not see the TCC solenoid or the computer is forcing TCC slippage due to the poor tranny conditions, is unknown. I wonder if it is possible to get so much gunk in between the contacts of the thermoswitch that it is actually making a false connection when the fluid warms up . And as Don said, it is making a groaning sound, like it is low. But the stick says it isn't.

I would like to think the transmission is fine, since it was slipping in ALL gears on the highway when Don was behind me, not just first or even second. Plus the TCC failure and even the possible premature "TRACTION OFF" light (which goes on when overheat condition is detected), but I am afraid that if I change the fluid/filter what little I have left is going to just go out the door.
