HI, i have a 92 SSEi, recently bought this vehicle 6 months ago and have been working on it since. Both cooling fans only come on when engine temp gets near redline(very hot) and only stay on for a couple of minutes, till the temp goes down a little. The engine stays pretty normal when driving (around 200) and starts to climb when sitting still. I changed the tstat to 180 and would like to do many more mods, but not until the cooling issue is solved. I'm thinking it may be the low speed relay but don't know where it is located. It does not come on when my ac is on. I also don't think my ac works. Any help would be appreciated.

I also suspect a relay. Under the black cover that says Maxi-fuse relay center on the firewall will be a set of relays. The two closest to the driver side are the low and high speed fan realys, I think. Swap them around, see what happens. Further to the right are fuses. Should be labeled, check out the fan fuse.

The best way I've found to keep the fans on and temps down is to use ZZP'* Estat. It'* a simple trick that uses another sensor in parallel with the original engine coolant temp sensor to trick the computer into thinking the car is actually hotter than it really is.
I can get away with using a 160 stat and the gauge reads 190 when it is actually about 160 and the fans are on almost all the time.

I've tried switchin the two relays and nothing different happened. I do not think the relays are broken, they look perfect in condition. I also checked the fuses, and nothing wrong. I'm getting frustrated and don't know what else to do. Am i right in thinking that the fans should be running at normal operating temp?

Try and get your car scanned. My 95 SSEi fans kick on at redline as well. Interestingly enough when I scanned it, 215 degrees where the fans kick on happens to be 240 degrees on my gauge...aka redline.
