My 96 SE started occasionally "bucking"/lurching/jerking, abt. 5 months ago, like it was trying to downshift.It only lasted a half-second and then might not do it again for many days. This happened at any speed between 70 MPH & 35 MPH. Today it happened again, going 50MPH so I pulled into a garage and they checked the codes for me. Up popped P0102. The mechanic said it would be about $300 to replace the MAF but I could try to clean it first. (The "check engine" light comes on when this happens).

I've read many posts here where cleaning with alcohol & Q-tips is advised. I'm not exactly sure how to do this or even where to find the MAF. Is it on the driver side of the engine on top of the throttle assembly? Can someone direct me to a picture & tell me if this is difficult?

No I have not cleaned my MAF. As far as cleaning the TB. I don't recall how many miles are on your car, but I would suggest inspecting it and cleaning it if you need to. There might be some "gunk" built up in the area where your MAF sensor sets inside the throat of the TB. The TB cleaning procedure is located in Techinfo as well. Make sure you remove the MAF sensor before you clean the throttle body. Also, pick up a new TB gasket - it'* cheap.
