Default Some problems that I could use help with.

Hey guy, as Ive said before im not a car guy, i want to become one very bad always have wanted to. I need some help here though.

My 1993 bonneville has some issues that I want to take care of because I need it to last as long as possible.

1. I have an oil leak, when mr oil change changed the oil they told me about it and I do see it leaking it is not major because Icheck the oil daily to make sure.

2. When I drive I get the smell of gasoline, I have started the car and looked for a fuel leak and found nothing.

3. The car stalls out on me when my gas tank hits anything below half a tank. It will happen when I slow down at a red light or while coasting through a roundabout.

4. My ignition is lose and almost looks like it can be pulled out if enough force is given.

Thank you guys so much, Im sorry if these questions make you role your eyes and say he'* an idiot, but I really love this car and want it to last. The guy I bought it from did not tell me anything and these things just started to come up.

2 and 3 - check your fuel pressure regulator, inspect the vacuum line for the smell of gas. oil leak, depends where its leaking, but if you dont mind checking it daily, go for it! but think about the harm you're doing to the environment.

Another member recently posted some problems with smelling gas while driving and i do believe his car would stall out as well. Check ur fuel filter, lines, and pump. The half tank comment u made really has me thinkin ur pump may be going bad and has trouble pulling fuel when the levels are low.

I'd go at these in this order:

#2. Clean the engine down with Purple Power, Simple Green or a reasonable cleaner. Don't hose or clean the alternator directly (they are allergic to water). Clean it as well as you can and repeat if needed. I'd spray down the motor...start the car and then hose things off.

#1. Now that the top of the motor is clean... Jack it up or put it on ramps. Clean the underside.

You are now in a good position to see and smell anything that shouldn't be happening.

#3. In the 92 and 93 years it was common for the fuel tank baffles to break apart in the tank. This allows the fuel to slosh on downhill, stops, and turns. The sloshing starves the pump and stalls the car. I'd start off with the fuel pressure test suggested and possibly change both the pump and the tank at the same time if the pressure isn't reasonably near the spec.

#4.. Not to worry. We drive Bonnevilles and very few folks would ever think about trying to steal them.
