Over Drive....sometimes yes, sometimes no

I've noticed my over drive isn't working the odd time. I can be doing like 120kms and the tach will be at almost 4000rpm....like it's never come out of drive. I've tried shifting from drive to over drive again, and it dosn't work. The only time it seems to work again is if i shut the car off then turn it back on. Usually the over drive will kick in and work again.

It's not throwing any codes or warning lights, either. This happened to anyone else? Do you think the cold weather could be contributing to it, as well?

Tam, didn't you have a trans scare not too long ago? I'm thinking you might have cooked something.

Well...it was low and shifting hard but I did catch it on time...
you don't think the cold would do it?

Possible. Jr would be good on this one. Here's an idea. You have an SE, so you don't have the extra trans cooler. To get your trans working a little warmer and rule that out, just tie a piece of cardboard over about 2/3 of ONE side of the radiator, and drive around. Keep a close eye on the temp gauge. You want it to run a little warmer, just not killer hot. See if the trans shifts right when it's covered. I used to have a car I had to do this with, and it's much colder up there.

[The reason it got so low was because the tranny pan was just about falling off :? I guess I had just enough in it, because it was just showing on the stick and it was shifting, just a bit hard. From there I did a whole fluid and filter change. The pan was ok....there was some dirt and tiny metal flecks in the pan's magnet. I honestly can't remember if it had a burnt smell or not...that was july...or august...or something like that...

Just strange thought that it does it only sometimes, and that usually shutting the car off and restarting fixes it...
