Default Overdrive Issue

I searched quite a few problems with our trannies, now i have only had the car about 3 months it has 130,000 on it its a 1997 SE. But when i took it on the highway for the first time (200 mile trip) i Put it in overdrive and set the crusie okydoky no prolem.... But then about 30 miles down the road my rps would all of a sudden jump up and i couldnt move, so i took it out of overdrive and put it in 3rd it would be ok. But to make a long story short overdrive slips, oh yeah and sometimes when its really cold if i start it right away and put it in gear(3rd) it doesnt move for about a minute then it will go. I took it in where i got the car and right away they said your tranny is bad.... Is that what you guys think? casuse i dont really wanna pay to have a new one put in. And the deal wont do crap for me.. I guess just let me know what you think..... If its torque converter, need a tranny flush. something like that.
Thanks
