You guys have mentioned chips in the computer, do you have to change the chip from the old computer to the new one?

Yes. Typically a replacement computer (unless you are getting it from a junkyard) will need your old PROM (programmed read only memory) chip or module plugged into it. The Bonneville computer is referred to as a PCM (powertrain control module) because it controls both the engine and the transmission. The PCM comprises the computer itself (which usually is the part that fails) and the PROM which is usually specific for model year, engine type, and transmission type. The same model of PCM (without the PROM) usually is used for many different years, makes and models. Check http://www.car-part.com for compatibility.

I have a green 1992 SSEi which is my driver and a 1992 SSEi parts car. The parts car ran fine but is hit in the front. I took the computer from the parts car and put it in mine and mine wouldnt start at all. But I didnt change the chips. Could this be why it didnt start?
