Oil Sending Unit

Where is the oil sending unit at? I need to replace it. Thanks.

Under the hood!

Ok, I can be a wiseass sometimes. Welcome to the forum!

Under the car, below the power steering pump and directly above the oil filter. It sticks out the 'rear' of the engine, facing the passenger side of the firewall. It has a 2-wire connector on it. Looks kinda like a big spark plug or O2 sensor.

What year and model is your car? You should put that in your signature. It'll help us to help you a ton.

Thanks, I found it, but I couldn't get at it. Its so far in there, I didn't have a tool that would twist it out. I wonder how much it would cost to do at a maintnence shop.

Probably pretty cheap. An hours labor minimum....maybe 60 bucks labor. Check your local auto parts store. The tool to pull it may be cheaper.

Jr, haven't you done this before?

ive had this prob before.. its a pretty easy fix job, as long as you have a hoist i hate creepers :)

I replaced mine. Got better access by removing the passenger front wheel and reaching it through there. Got dirty, but is an easy thing to change once you get at it.

I replaced it on my 93. I did the same thing. Took off the passenger front wheel and mud splash guard, and it was right there. I think I used a crescent wrench.

What problems do you get with a bad oil sender?

fuddyduddy121 02-02-2003 01:19 PM

On mine the oil gauge pressure starting reading too high.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try removing the passenger side tire to get at it. My car has been acting really strange lately and I'm hoping that the problem is the oil sending unit. The RPM's go up and down whenever the oil pressure gauge is goes into the red zone. After awhile, my car just dies. It seems as if my car is bogging. Would you think it could be the fault of the oil sending unit?
