Default Can't Read Codes

I recently purchased a new Actron CP9110. Anyway, I can't get this thing to read the codes. After I punch my car, I will go to "Read Codes" and it will sit there for a second and then give me a communications error. If I select the "Field Service" option, the Check Engine light flashes Code 12 (Which means everything is okay.).

I've checked all the fuses I can find (The ones in the engine bay and the ones on the passenger side of the vehicle. What else could cause this problem?

I just bought a CP-9190 the other day. Is the ignition on or is the car running when you are trying to read the codes?

You have the key in run? You have a good connection to the ALDL line?

Try the paperclip method of pulling codes and see if that works. It'* in Techinfo.

You have the CP9111 cartridge installed?
The cable is firmly seated at both ends?
You have over ~8V at the battery?

ya the key'* gotta be on for sure. Also, check to see that the pins of the scanner are fully engaging all the slots in the DLC connector.

Thanks for the replies.

Key is in the ignition... Car is on, but not running.

I tried the tool on another car and it didn't work either. So then I took my car to autozone and they have a new Actron tool that CAN read the codes, so I'm thinking the problem is the tool or the cable.

Does anyone have the schematics to this cable?

If the reader, or cable is defective - I'd take it back for a replacement.

You do have the GM cartridge and the correct cable for your car, right? I think the OBDIs (other than the hybrid 94-95) used the cable with the separate power line to the lighter socket, iirc.

Yes... I have the GM Cartrdige.. It is the right cable and cartridge, it just isn't communicating with my car properly.

I've contacted the seller on Ebay, and he is willing to replace the piece that is broken. I think I'm just going to ask that he replace the whole thing so I don't have to try to figure out if it is the cable (Which is what I'm thinking now).

I called Actron previously and they complained the tool was "obsolete" and refused to help me. Well, I called them again this morning and the response was totally different. They didn't even bring it up and tried to help me troubleshoot the tool. They are going to send me another data cable and a different power adapter.

Thanks for the replies.
