Unhappy More Transmission issues

I'm currently having another transmission problem. I had it rebuilt 15,000 miles ago. everything was fine until about last week when out of nowhere my car started shuttering incredibly bad when i would accelerate from a dead stop. i didn't really think too much into it, but had my boyfriend top of the fluids and look over some stuff. My spark plugs were bad, so decided to change them. This apparently caused whatever that shutter was to get worse. much worse.

when i went to drive it the car acts like its in neutral. the rpm'* fly sky high, and after a second its slams into first and goes. We didn't know what to do, so we decided to try a ATF drain, and filter change. This lead us to find a metal shard in the ATF pan.

98 Bonneville <link to picture of piece and the access hole under the pan.

We believe it came from the forward drive band, but when i had it towed to my mechanic (who fixed it before) to see what he had to say. all he told me was he didn't pull it apart, but he has reasoning to believe its from the planetary gear. This doesn't sound right to me. Any advice? he'* willing to the labor for free, all i have to pay for is the part. but there is quite a price difference in a band and a planetary gear. please post anything you know. thank you.

That seems like a big piece to get to the pan. Any chance of taking pictures covering the whole trans area under the pan? My first thought was from the Diff. area. Is this a 4t65-hd trans? I'll flip threw my manuals and see if I can spot anything.

Dan..HD or not the parts will look the same

That piece doesn't look anything like the planetary gears on the diff.

I've actually gone through a couple of transmissions before and am having trouble placing that piece. Heck..there'* a third gear sprag sitting on my desk here at work.

Ok, I went threw a few dozen diagrams and nothing is looking like that part. I'm no expert in transmissions. But this is what I can tell you. It'* not a tooth from any gear. It looks like aluminum. So it'* part of the case, valve body, or oil pump. I saw a few parts on the oil pump that look close. That'* where I would start. The bang was that piece hitting something, like your planetary. One of the images looks like it has a shinny part, that'* where it was pinched. Remove the oil pump and give it a good close inspection. It almost looks like that part holds a pin in place, which brings me to the second possibility, the case. I don't believe it'* the valve body, but it is made of the same material. Please be sure to come back and let us know what it is for future reference.

I didnt get a chance to take a picture of the entire bottom side. I had to get the pan back on to have it towed to the shop who rebuilt this in April. Im pretty sure this is the 4T65E-HD but im not 100% and couldnt find any markings on the box.

If you go to the full res version of this picture:
P1010414

You can kind of see (sorry my camera stinks and would not take a good macro shot) the face of that band is missing where the servo/actuator pin is supposed to push. This matches the round area of the part i found in the pan. Along with the fracture line on both sides of the piece (left and right in picture)
P1010427

It measures about 25mm x 12mm x 4mm thick

It is a steel part. I should also mention it still drives in reverse just fine, does not slip or make any strange noises. It just chatters and will free rev while making a very slow effort in moving forward, but it does move forward.

Anyone have a side profile picture of the forward or 2-1 manual coast bands? Im quite sure this is where the part came from. This was the ONLY part in the pan, no shavings, or bits in the fluid or on the sludge magnet.

OK, I think I see it now. Right by the 2-1 manual servo between the oil lines. Oh, that'* part of the trans case. Like I said, no expert here, but if the case is damaged, it needs to be replaced.

Yes sorry i am talking about the band seen between the oil lines in the middle of the picture.

Is that indeed the 2-1 manual servo? My alldata diagram shows that as the forward servo. Im thinking that part is off the band itself not the case, I was able to stick my finger in and pull the band away from the rod and there is no back face on it like this new one does.
4t65e-manband

And it does look to be closer to what i took a picture of then this forward band:

If we have the shop take the box out and pull it apart is it wise to just replace the band or are there other things we should consider replacing?

Looks like it could be from the bracket at about the 4 or 5 oclock area.
