Oil Change- Oil Leak

Changed oil in the car today, ran into few issues
1. Where can I get the seal/ gasket that goes around the drain plug. Its a rubber gasket- its not leaking but it was pretty chewed up.

2. Saw some oil drops on the oil pan, on some careful examination realized its coming from the bolts holding the pan. 4 bolts were loose, 2 of them were so loose that they were about to fall out. What can cause them to be loose? I checked all of them and tightened these 4.

Those really shouldn't come loose, but vibration can cause it. Did you use a torque wrench when you tightened them? Chances are it's going to keep leaking.

Please put your year and trim in your signature file so we can help answer your questions better. If you need directions, there is a sticky in the Introductions to New Members area.

You can pick up an oil drain plug gasket at most auto supply stores.

Torque specs for the oil pan bolts are:
1985 - 1987 : 96 in-lbs
1988 and later : 120 - 125 in-lbs.

That's inch pounds and not foot pounds. they sometimes come loose over time or if the pan was ever dropped and not torque correctly.

Dan, do I need to change the oil pan gasket?

If it keeps leaking it will need to be changed. Most of the time you can't just tighten it more.

I have found those gaskets at Autozone and Advance. Try your local parts store and ask at the counter.
