Please tell me that a 92 SSEi has a 180 thermostat and that the 195 that the mechanic wants to put in is right.....
My car is heating up guys and the only way to keep it from going bizurk is to run my heater...he also mentioned to run the air conditioner too????? Yes no?????
Anyways, I thought that I had the 190 and was going for the 180 to keep it cooler????? I dont know if being Canadian makes a difference in what temps we are talking about???? I wouldnt think so. I was so convinced that I was going for a 180 but how do I argue with the mechanic????

You need to go with the 180 to keep it cooler, but a lot of mechanics won't put them in though. Oreillys wouldn't even sell me a 180 thermostat for my 96' they said it would mess up the computer, but there is a lot of people here with 180's in there cars and everything is fine with theirs. I have had my 180 in for about a month now and it has never went above 200. If you are having temp problems you might need to flush and replace the coolant in your radiator. Your 92 would have came with the green coolant which will probably only last a couple of years. If it hasn't been done for a while it is time, summer is coming up. I don't know what kind of temps you are facing in Canada but it would still be a good thing to do.

Kimmers! Most mechanics WILL NOT put in any other T-Stat other the OEM reccommended one for liability issues that may arise later! That's why your mechanic wants to put in a 195, so you can't sue him or his company for installing the wrongs parts later on. trust me, I work with this very issue day after day! I too live in Canada, Edmonton infact, where it gets very cold most of the time, but I still run a 180 for the summer months. :wink:

So then my gut feeling was right, see you guys taught me well:)
So how can I tell him I want the 180 without overstepping the trust issue with him.
He seems to know that I look into these things. Can this be a problem?

I really feel the 180 is the one needed.
He is going to throw this in for free when he does the brake inspection and oil change and filters tomorrow. So I should go with the 180? Since he isnt charging me for it there is no paper trail as to him doing it anyways, so he could deny the work if there were issues....correct?

he wanted to do the thermostat and see if it fixed the temps, as I mentioned he is not charging me for the thermostat, he is gonna sneek it in....if its not the thermostat he feels it maybe the water pump for the engine. He is willing to give me a 20 an hour rate compared to the 74 I would be paying elsewhere. Does this guy sound too good to be true? Or what could his other motives be? Any comments? I hate to be to paranoid but sometimes I wonder when someone is too nice. I did the math and it is a very nice savings!

So why is it you think you need a 180? When you say overheating what do you mean? What is your temp?

A 195 that is working properly should keep your temp well within safe limits....say 200 to 205 Faren.

Mine has been running 200-210 for about 190,000 miles now. She still uses no oil between 3-4,000 mile oil changes. What do you think the 195 is the root cause of your problem?

If it was malfunctioning it wouldnt open at the correct times thus causing her temperature problems.

Kimmers, this guy may be for real, and may not. Could be slow for business, and he hopes you'll send him some if you're happy. Could also just be a really nice guy, but could also have 'other' motives. I don't need to go any further with that last one. Your gut instict has served you right almost every time I've seen it. Trust yourself. See how his work is. If you don't have problems, and he isn't too "overwhelming", go back to him if you need to.

Yes, running the climate control in Auto will help lower the temps. It causes both fans to run on high, and yes, the water pump can be a big contributor to your temps, especially with the odometer reading you have.

JSeabert's 93 SSE saw a big temp decrease when the water pump was changed. He has about the same mileage as you. Now his car never gets over 75° (that's a joke, cuz the tranny is shot and he doesn't drive it now) :D

Are you haveing problems when you are driving or when you are stopped. You mentioned running the AC or heater, so I assume you meant when you are stopped. If it keeps it up consider putting in a by pass for you fans so they run all the time or put a switch in so you can turn them on when you want.

Im in Sask. Canada and i run a 180 through all months never a SES light or any problems. and i bought it for dirt cheap from some part store here.
